报告摘要:
Two issues about consolidation theory are addressed in this lecture. One is the effect of “non-uniform” consolidation on average degree of consolidation (DOC), and another is a new theory for prefabricated horizontal drain (PHD) induced consolidation. The non-uniform consolidation refers to spatial and time variations in the permeability (kv) and coefficient of volumetric compressibility (mv) of soil induced by a consolidation process. The effect of non-uniform consolidation on the average DOC of a prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) unit cell (a PVD and its influencing zone) and under the one-dimensional (1D) condition was investigated through laboratory model tests and finite-element analyses (FEAs). Based on the results of the FEAs, methods for considering the effect of the non-uniform consolidation in PVD consolidation theory and Terzaghi’s 1D consolidation theory have been proposed. As for the second issue, the theories for PVD induced consolidation are either for an axisymmetric PVD unit or under plane strain condition. For using PHDs, the horizontal spacing between PHDs is usually smaller than that in the vertical direction, and the existing theory cannot be directly applied. A matching method has been developed for PHD induced consolidation using either the axisymmetric or plane strain PVD unit cell theory. Further an approximate consolidation theory has also been proposed for a surface soil layer subjected to vacuum pressure applied through the PHDs at a shallow depth from the surface.

Prof. Jinchun Chai is a professor in geotechnical engineering at Saga University, Japan. He is a member of Engineering Academy of Japan (日本工学院院士). His research interests are: (1) soft ground improvement; (2) numerical analysis in geotechnical engineering; and (3) geoenvironmental engineering. He serves as an Associate Editor for Canadian Geotechnical Journal and Geotextiles and Geomembranes; and as an Editorial Board Member (EBM) for Computers and Geotechnics and other nine international journals. He published three books and more than 120 journal papers. On SCOPUS, he has about 3,000 citations and his H-index is 28.
